Alton Towers
This poster shows the house and gardens when it was owned by a group of businessmen who had purchased the estate in 1924 after the death of the 20 th Earl of Shrewsbury . The Countess could no longer maintain the house and gardens but they had been a real showpiece in Victorian times . They had been created from 1814 onwards and were opened to the general public from 1839.
The amusement park we know today did not begin until 1980 and huge investments have been made by its current owners – Merlin Entertainments
Artwork by William Haslehust ( 1866 – 1949 )
