Berwick – on- Tweed
Royal Border Bridge
This is a magnificent BR ( NER ) 1948 poster of the Royal Border Bridge , painted ahead of the Centenary Celebrations of it’s construction between 1847 and 1850 . It carries the main East Coast Line between Edinburgh and London King’s Cross on Robert Stephenson’s superb viaduct spanning the estuary of the river Tweed . Queen Victoria and Prince Albert opened the 2160 ft long bridge which carries the rail track almost 140ft above the river on 28 arches , 13 of which are above water. Cuneo was famous for his artistic daring and the perspective here is from outside the line of the parapet , and British Rail often co- operated by allowing him unrivalled access to the best areas to paint pictures .
