The Derbyshire Spa
The Crescent
This is a 1949 (LMR) panoramic Poster of the centre of Derbyshire's Spa town with the unmistakable Royal Crescent as the focal point . This was modelled on Bath’s more famous crescent by architect John Carr and was constructed from 1780. Behind the crescent is the Dome . It is a remarkable structure , larger than St Peter’s Basilica in Rome or St Paul’s in London and is the largest unsupported dome in Britain . It was constructed between 1780 and 1789 by the Duke of Devonshire as a magnificent stable block to house the horses and servants of the guests of the Crescent Hotels.
