Cumbria -The Coronation Scot Ascending Shap Fell

This is a very famous 1937 Poster which was issued by LMS to promote its flagship express from London to Scotland.

The four mile climb with a 1 in 75 gradient over Shap Fell was part of the Lancaster to Carlisle Railway. This 70 mile section took two and a half years to build and was completed in 1846. This poster shows the streamlined Duchess at the head of the Coronation Scot tackling the notorious climb.

Artwork by Norman Wilkinson( 1878 – 1971 )

Code number 63746
