Sadly , the clarity and crispness of this poster is not as high as we would like because the quality of the original we had to work was less than wonderful . It is still a lovely poster though, and it's lack of sharpness is reflected in the reduced price.
Monsal Dale
Derbyshire Dales
This1955 BR poster depicts the railway which ran down from Buxton towards Matlock as it runs through Monsal Dale and over the viaduct .
This famous bridge was built by Midland Railway and completed in 1863 and its correct name is the Headstone Viaduct . The whole structure is over 300 feet long and the five spans carried the railway about 40 feet above the river . Unfortunately it was not built particularly well and around 40 years after commissioning , slippage required it to have major remedial work.
The viaduct was preserved in 1970 and today is a popular walk.
Artwork by Peter Collins ( 1907 -1908 ).
