Dover
The Golden Arrow
Many of the ferries between Dover and Calais conveyed railway carriages by day and night . The famous Golden Arrow and Paris Night Ferry coaches were shunted onto the steamers that continually plied the route .
This 1934 poster for Southern Railways shows the railway and the car ferries leaving simultaneously . It was not until HS1 , the channel tunnel and the TGV lines were constructed in the late 20 th century that the travel times illustrated on this poster were bettered !
