Edinburgh Castle
This is a wonderful 1920's LNER Poster of Edinburgh Castle.
To the south and west the Castle is protected by sheer cliffs some 220ft high and the views over Edinburgh from the ramparts are magnificent.
The area around Edinburgh has been inhabited since around 1000 BC and it became the capital of Scotland in about 1500 AD. The Romans established a main fort north of Edinburgh in about 79AD but by 200 AD they had given up any hope of controlling the locals and eventually retreated behind Hadrian’s wall some 100 miles to the south .
