High Force
The River Tees falls almost 70ft over the edge of the whinstone ( black basalt) seam .
At the time of this painting ( 1962 ) the river used to split and fall either side of the central rock core, but since the building of the Cow Green Reservoir in the upper Tees valley , ( though it does sometimes after exceptional rainfall ), this seldom happens now .
