Ilfracombe
Ilfracombe has been settled since the iron Age and the hilly location allowed forts to be built to protect the sheltered harbour .
The town became an important trading hub as the local market sold local produce and imported foreign goods. Soon after the first ferries arrived in 1823 , regular services were established to Bristol and Swansea. By the 1870’s , wooden piers had been constructed to allow several vessels to dock at the same time , and the town was then flooded with tourists.
