This 1950,s British Rail ( WR ) poster shows the river Teme running below the castle , construction of which began in the 11 th century .It was a Yorkist stronghold in the Wars of the Roses and a Royalist base in the English Civil War . By the late 17 th century it was abandoned and gradually fell into disrepair . After a century of decay , the ruins were purchased by the 2 nd Earl of Powis , whose family still maintain possession today .
