The Night Mail

The Enginemen

This is a striking workmanlike 1924 portrayal commissioned for the LMS.

After WW1 the multitude of railway companies were in deep financial plight and in 1923 it was artists like Norman Wilkinson who started to take a major hand in the artistic style of the advertising for companies like LMS in their attempt to gain over their competitors . It was he who masterminded the Royal Academy series such as this artwork , presenting the industrial side of railways that had hitherto been neglected

Artwork by Sir William Orpen RA ( 1878 -1931 )

Code number 63906
