Southend is only 36 miles from London so the resort has been popular since Georgian times .

Once the famous pier had been constructed in the 1880’s the influx of day trippers became a torrent . Visitor facilities were expanded and the coastal gardens illustrated in this poster , were landscaped . This poster was issued by BR in 1948 .
