Southend –on – Sea
The first wooden pier at Southend was built in 1830 but because of the mud flats, in order to give sufficient draught for boats to moor safely , the pier had to be at least a mile long . By 1889 a new iron structure had been completed , and although closed during WW2 , it was reopened in 1945 and its golden years followed, and ,between 1949 and 1950 more than 5 million people walked its decks .
