THE GIANTS CAUSEWAY

This UNESCO world heritage site has some 40,000 interlocking , mainly hexagonal basalt columns .The same formation re-appears across the sea in Scotland , where Fingals Cave on the island of Staffa displays similar lava columns . Some of these columns are 40 ft high . These were caused by intense volcanic activity some 50 – 60 million years ago when vast fields of molten basalt bubbled through beds of chalk. As the basalt cooled , it contracted from the surface downwards, forming the separated columns .
