Royal Tunbridge Wells
The mineral waters were discovered here in the first decade of the 17 th Century and word spread quickly , so by the 1640’s , there were promenades linking the wells and the town . The Civil War , and then a disastrous fire, caused much damage but rebuilding followed in the 1680’s. The main street was then paved with clay tiles hence it’s name “The Pantiles “. This is a 1960’s BR poster , one of the very last to be painted rather than produced by photography .
