Whitby
This 1928 LNER Poster depicts the departure of Captain Cook from Whitby on the third of his famous voyages, this time in “Resolution “.
During this expedition he visited the coast of California and made landfall in the Hawaiian Islands . Sadly Cook was killed in a violent exchange there on 14th Feb 1779. He had been hired by the Royal Society to go to the Pacific in 1776 after his mapping skills of the early 1760’s around Newfoundland in Canada came to their attention.
