Whitby – The Harbour

This poster , painted in the 1930 ties shows the inner harbour , upstream of the swing bridge. It was built in 1908 and the two sections can swing independently so that boats can leave in a two hour window either side of high tide each day.

It is of course said that the Irish author Abraham ( Bram ) Stoker found some of his inspiration for his Gothic novel 'Dracula' after staying in a house on the West Cliff in Whitby in 1890.
