This poster shows the famous “ Shambles “ area in a 1960’s British Railways poster by Alan Carr Linford. This very distinctive street has many overhanging timber framed buildings , some of which date from the fourteenth century.
It was once known as “ the great flesh shambles “ probably from the Anglo- Saxon word Fleshammels, the word for the shelves that butchers used to display their meat .
As recently as 1827 , twenty – five butchers shops were located along the street, but there are more like that number of “gift shops “ there now
